After long waiting of over three years the new avatar of Mahindra Reva electric vehicle is here. It was first called as NXR when it was showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show few years ago. The car with this name was expected to be launched in India by 2012. Due to various reasons including the wait for subsidies and tax relaxation in 2013 Indian budget, the launch was delayed. Mahindra e2o was rolled out in India, in March 2013. The new electric vehicle is filled with some superb technological features which make a customer find relevancy between his mobile and this car. The manufacturer has rightly tagged e2o as the 'Future of Mobility'. To name a few features, there is the smart phone application, personal web page feature, GPS enabled system and Bluetooth connectivity. All these features appreciate the value of this product. Mahindra e2o is available in two variants and in Arctic Silver, Coral Blue, Eco Green, Oceanic White, Spanish Red and Sunfire Yellow colours.
A 3 phase induction motor drives the wheels of Mahindra e2o. This induction motor is powered by 48 V Lithium-ion batteries which do not require maintenance. It takes 5 hours to charge these batteries to their full capacity. If the battery is charged for one hour using a 15 A socket and 220 V power input it can run for a distance of 20 km. A fully charged battery can take the car to a distance of 100 km. The maximum power developed by the motor stands up to 25 hp @ 3750 rpm. The maximum torque available is 53 Nm @ 0-3400 rpm. The electric vehicle uses an automatic transmission system. The top speed attainable on this 830 kg car is 81 km/h. Having McPherson Struts with gas filled shock absorbers at front and gas filled shock absorbers with coil springs as rear suspension, driving and handling this low-weight EV turns out to be a child's play. The turning radius of the car is just 3.9 m which makes it very suitable for driving in cities.
The exterior build quality and style stands out to be one of the major advantages of Mahindra e2o over the previous model. The company came up with the exterior design by joining hands with DC designs. The car has smoothly finished edges and sloping down windscreen which make it more acceptable compared to Reva EV. It is made of dent resistant body panel and the colours used over this panel are actually impregnated into the structure. This is done to avoid pollution which occurs during normal painting process. The panel also avoids possibilities of scratches thereby relieving the customer from stress when he parks his e2o in the parking lot. The interior of is the most exciting thing about this advanced automobile. It is loaded with some high-tech features and convenience equipment which make each drive a pleasant one. Since there is no engine used in this vehicle the NVH levels are almost zero. This increases the comfort of travelling in the e2o for longer distances. It has an intelligent 'Distance To Empty' feature which couples with the GPS navigation system in the dashboard to show how far the car can travel with available quantity of electric charge. There is one area where Mahindra e2o stands apart from all the petrol and diesel cars. The way this car is connected to the customer through smart phone application is really interesting and exciting to know. Through few applications on the customer's smart phone, there can be many operations performed remotely like locking the door, switching on the AC and also charging battery with REVive technology when there is very less charge. The application also keeps the customer updated about the car's condition so that he can be prepared for any problem that may come up. The basic tubular structure of Mahindra e2o is strong and has crumple zones which are aligned to European Safety Norms. Hill Hold system included in the drivetrain makes sure that the car is under complete control when it takes on steep hills.
Mahindra Reva has built safety features right from the basic structure of e2o. The car has side impact beams and is modeled to hold crumple zones so that the forces of impact of a collision do not injure passengers sitting inside. The company has built in the Hill Hold feature which makes sure that the car does not run backwards when not accelerated during hill climbs. Apart from these there are few advanced features like REVIVE which automatically charges the battery for customer from remote location when the car has drained out charge. The remote diagnostics application continuously studies the performance of the car and keeps the driver updated about condition of various parts. This improves the safety of each drive on this electric vehicle.
